Storm and the Word

quotescover-JPG-38One whole day Jesus preached about God’s Kingdom. On that day, when evening had come, Jesus said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.”  The word of God is given in order to lead us ashore, a heavenly aboard, with abundance of life!  But the word is considered by many only for material blessings.

I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing. – Hosea 8:12

For obtaining abundance of life we must have the living word within us. Perhaps the disciples were good listeners of the word and happy to have Jesus himself in their boat throughout the journey. Suddenly a storm started blowing and raging the sea. Disciples tried all the procedures to control the boat that they would have learnt during  their day jobs as fishermen. But there was no sign of hope. When they were exhausted, fear crept into their hearts. Similar to the storm a storm was blowing in their mind. A feeling of insecurity hurdled them. Many of us adopt this same technique in our life’s journey by keeping Jesus with us. We do read the bible every day; attend Sunday services regularly and gather as prayer groups. But when problems come knocking at our doorstep we abandon all our beliefs and use our life experience to tackle the problem head on.

But The Bible says in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Jesus reiterates this in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” If the word of God is not kept in our hearts, Satan may fill that vacuum with fear, and fear leads to unbelief and causes us to sin. The disciples poured out their unbelief.

Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” – Mark 4:38

Here we can see the sequence of Jesus’ intervention in our chaotic life. He got up and immediately handled the situation before pointing out to the disciples’ disbelief.  In the helpless condition of our life Jesus sets it right immediately, if we call upon Him. Jesus calmed the storm by sending His word. “And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” –  Mark 4:39

We always try to accommodate problems but Jesus is always particular about casting out the problems. We deal it in a superfluous way but Jesus deals it in a supernatural way. Our human approach is uneasy and at times irrelevant too. Is it wise to formulate a formula already programmed by someone for an application! We just need to apply it. Jesus has done everything for us. Only thing which we need is that we must be aware of what Jesus has done for us. The need of the hour is awareness and a mind to apply that awareness. Disciples were aware of Jesus and His purpose of coming by hearing the word but failed to apply it. Solution for every problem is programmed in Jesus.

” For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.” Colossians 1:19-20

As Jesus spoke to nature we may also speak to the nature or the problem we are encountering. Jesus equips us by saying, “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:23-24.

Is it possible to operate the above words in our life? It is possible only if we inherit the word. John 1:1 says that the word was in the beginning and was with God and it is God. John 1: 14 says that word has become flesh and dwelled among us. And we had seen the glory of God. Similarly the word must be transformed as our body, mind and soul. It should become our flesh. How will this happen? Firstly, we should realize our mistakes and the pain that Jesus suffered, in our body. We must believe that Jesus took our diseases, curses and sins on Him. We should think why Jesus? And arrive at a conclusion that it is Not Him, It is me! I should have been there in His place. This realisation brings deliverance in our body. Secondly, we should have a mind that Jesus had on the cross. People are ignorant of what they are doing hence we must plead for their forgiveness. Finally, we must be bold enough to give our spirit in our father’s hand.

With these three simple steps ‘word’ starts living in our body, mind and soul. Our perspective will be different now. Earlier if someone came against us we would ask people to pray but when the word lives in us we will be happy that we have an opportunity to exercise Mt. 5: 44 in our life. Likewise we will become the doers of the word. Then we will not question Jesus that why He is not bothered but we will be bothered about the people who are perishing without Jesus. John does mention that there were other boats too in that sea !

And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. – Mark 4:36
Then we will minister the word saying
Peace be still.
And God will move to the whole world saying “
Be still, and know that I am God… Psalms 46: 10. Amen!
