The song that has been all over social media and arguably the most successful song by Hillsong United, wasn’t even on the top of the priority list for the group when they started working on Zion – the groups’s third studio Album. It doesn’t have the traditional Hillsong upbeat style of music nor does it feature the vocals of the established front-men. But when Taya Smith sings the bridge part it captivates the crowd at their concerts.

Bridge –  Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders               Let me walk upon the waters               Wherever You would call me               Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander               And my faith will be made stronger               In the presence of my Savior

The song ‘Oceans’, is a reminiscence of Peter walking on water. After feeding the 5000 Jesus sent his disciples ahead of him to reach Gennesaret by boat while he dispersed the crowds and went up into the mountain to pray. When evening fell, the boat in which the disciples had sailed was about three and half miles into the Sea of Galilee. Jesus saw the disciples in the boat distressed by the waves; for the wind was contrary.

And in the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea. – Matthew 14:25

Peter on realizing that it was Jesus who was walking towards them on the water asks Jesus if he could also walk on water.  And he said, Come. And Peter went down from the boat, and walked upon the waters to come to Jesus.(Mt 14:29) . This the first time Peter experienced something that was supernatural to him. He wanted to get closer to Jesus and his faith allowed him to emulate Jesus as he too walked on water. Of all the disciples only Peter was willing to step into the unknown putting all his trust on Jesus.

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and saith unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? – Matthew 14:30-31

But when Peter took his eyes off Jesus and saw the waves of the oceans around him he starts to sink. Immediately Jesus took hold of him and they both entered the boat and the winds ceased. Our life’s journey is similar to the sea of Galilee that night. We all can relate with Peter. Our initial faith carries us through the initial phase but when we see everything turning against us we fail to keep our eyes on Jesus and start to Panic. The No. 1 Rule for someone who falls in quick sand is “DON’T PANIC”, which is easier said than done. The more aimlessly you move around the more you sink. Similarly in the quicksand of our lives we need to keep calm and keep our faith on Jesus. “He must increase, but I must decrease. – John 3:30”.  The more we depend on our own resources the more we will sink in the ocean of our problems. But as soon as we acknowledge that Jesus is the only way the waves of our lives calm down we enjoy a much smoother sailing.
