According to the book of Genesis Adam was created by God out of the soil of the earth and He breathed into his nostrils. Adam became a living person. God created the world and all that is in it by His word and when He found everything was good He created man giving him all the provisions he would require. Adam was told to cultivate the soil and name all the creatures of the earth. He did that meticulously.
God provided everything to Adam. For cultivation God sent rain and plants and trees started growing. God felt the need of woman and created her from Adam’s rib bone while he was asleep. God told them not to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God wanted mankind to lead a carefree life by completely leaning on Him. For this God gave Adam freewill. Somehow that freewill was misused. Adam was unable to understand the grace of God and disobeyed. Realizing that he was guilty, he fled from the Presence of God and tried to hide himself. When God reached him, he had inaugurated the world’s first blame game. A blame game is usually played just to cover one’s own mistakes. However this ‘blame game’ multiplies one’s mistake. Again the freewill was utilized for choosing evil. Now as he had eaten the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil he knew what was good and what was evil. Yet he was unable to take the right decision. As a husband he was unable to guide his wife according to God’s will. As a father he was unaware of the rivalry between his two sons.
The book of Romans deals with these characteristics of mankind imparted from Adam. “But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.” – Rom 7 :8-11 . God punished Adam by sending him out of the garden of Eden and charged him to toil the land. Yet the freewill was not withdrawn from him nor from all mankind. Archaeological evidence is there for the ark of Noah but the existence of Adam has no such archaeological evidence. Bible says that Adam lived for 930 years. But the characteristics of Adam is still alive in many of our lives and is this not a viable evidence for his existence.
Death in Adam, Life in Christ
“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those. who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.” – Rom 5: 12-18
The character study of Adam will be incomplete without an insight on the second Adam. Here Paul introduces the remedial measure that Lord has provided to mankind by the obedience of His son. Now there is a chance for every man as God has revoked His own judgment. I had earlier said that in the absence of archaeological evidence our traits itself bear witness for his existence how much better we could be a witness to Jesus for whom there are prophetical and archaeological evidences. Though everyone says that sin is in our blood because of Adam, but we must admit that it is not automatic but by our own desire only. So if we desire for a sinless life we will definitely have it too.
Let the character of Jesus be made known to all through our life.
