The Promise Land is Near

  • As the Philistine army gathered their forces against the Israelites, Saul was perplexed and could not even decide his next move. The realisation that the days of his reign were numbered was dawning on him only now. When Samuel had prophesied about this day, he did not understand but seeing the enemy at his doorstep, he now wished that he had adhered to the prophet’s rebuke. With the massacre of the priestly clan of Nob and the Ephod being inaccessible (as it was with Abiathar, the remaining priest who had fled and aligned himself with David), Saul seemingly had no…

    A Disguised King, A Baffled Necromancer and A Dead Prophet – 1 Samuel 28
  • We love one another and take care of them. We love our children, and we give them all they need. We love to take care of the sick and the poor and feel proud to stand with them during their helpless situation. Yet, our resources are limited and we cannot go beyond that to help someone. For example, we love to hover around our children but practically we cannot be with them always. Knowing our limitations, God promises to take care of us when we fail to care for our dear ones. Can a mother forget the baby at her…

    God Who Cares For Us
  • David knew that Saul would not give up chasing him till he had caught and killed him. So he fled to the Philistine territory and took shelter with Achish, the king of Gath. When Saul found out, he gave up searching for David and turned his attention to the growing forces of the Philistine army that were about to come against him. Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your eyes, let a place be assigned to me in one of the country towns, that I may live there. Why should your servant live in the…

The Philistine Forces Assemble – 1 Samuel 27&29
  • Learning is a lifelong process. A famous and universally accepted quote says, “What one knows is only a handful, whereas the unknown is the size of the world.” How much you learn is like a handful of sand in the world, and you still have a whole world to study. We should not stop learning, thinking that we have learned everything. We teach others with the handful of knowledge we gained but stop improving our knowledge. Almost all Psalms of David are his learnings through hardships, and he composed them for our benefit. I Trust You Lord In you, LORD…

Teach Me Lord – Psalm 25
  • After a brief moment of respite, Saul resumed his hunt to capture and kill his predecessor David. As David was traversing through the desert of Ziph, the natives were informing Saul about his every move. Saul went down to the desert, with three thousand of his troops and made his camp on the hill of Hakilah. Unbeknownst to him, David was hiding in the wilderness and when he heard about Saul’s arrival, formed a scouting party of his own to gather information on his enemy’s whereabouts. When David was told that the Israel army had arrived, he and Abishai went…

    A Partridge in the Mountains – 1 Samuel 26
  • Sandwiched between the two assassination opportunities of Saul that were presented to David, his encounter with Nabal and Abigail shows us a different side of him. Samuel was the one true ally that David had by his side as it was he who had anointed him as the king of Israel. After his death, David knew that Saul would try to hunt him down even more aggressively. He retreated to the Desert of Paran where he and his men encountered the shepherds of a rich man named Nabal who was a descendant of Caleb. When David heard that Nabal was…

Fool, Foil and Follies – 1 Samuel 25
  • David and his men were hiding in Judah when word came to them that the Philistines were raiding the threshing floors of Keilah. Even though strategically Keilah was part of Judah, its close proximity to Philistine territory made it a frequent target for looters who would raid the town during the harvest season. When David heard about the happenings at Keilah, he immediately inquired of the Lord whether he and his men should go and attack the Philistines. …the LORD answered him, “Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand. 1 Samuel 23:4…

    From Evildoers Come Evil Deeds – 1 Samuel 23 & 24
  • David was now officially on the run as Saul had placed an open bounty on his head. He went to Nob, a town just a few miles northeast of Jerusalem to meet Ahimelek, the priest. After the destruction of Shiloh, the town of Nob had taken its place as the religious capital of Israel, housing the high priest, the ephod and the entire priestly clan who were descendants of Eli. When Ahimelek the priest saw David, he was afraid, as news of his feud with Saul would have surely made its way to the nearby town of Nob. When Ahimilek…

    A Not So Holy Mission – 1 Samuel 21 & 22
  • After evading Saul and his men at Naioth, David returned to Jerusalem to meet Jonathan. He narrated all that he had been through over the last few days and how Saul tried to kill him. While Samuel believed David when he told him the same account, Jonathan found it hard to believe that his father had any intentions to kill David who was now the king’s son-in-law. Jonathan naively assured David that his father would not make a move without his knowledge but David knew what was in Saul’s heart something that his own son was not able to comprehend.…

    A Sworn Friendship – 1 Samuel 20
  • The tales of David’s conquest of the giant spread throughout the land, garnering the love and respect of all the people of Israel. Even the soldiers in Saul’s army respected David as he led them in countless battles, and with God by his side, they would always come out victorious. The admiration for David was not limited to the people of Israel, as Saul’s own children loved David more than they respected their father. Saul was losing control of his subjects, his army, his kingdom and even his own family and desperately sought to get rid of this humble shepherd…

    The Plot to Kill David – 1 Samuel 18 & 19
  • When scripture talks about the power in the prayer of a righteous person, we inadvertently misunderstand that the prayers of the sinners are powerless. When we receive answers to our prayers, we think that we are righteous and are overwhelmed with joy and embrace pride. We attribute our righteousness as the sole cause for the answers we have received. On the other hand, if someone else’s prayer is not answered, we think they are unrighteous. Are we not forgetting the parable that Jesus told about the Pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18:9-14) and how keen God is to hear…

    The Powerful And Active Prayer
  • One of the most popular narratives in the Bible, the battle between David and Goliath has made its way into pop culture and is often referred to in sports when an underdog beats the defending champion. But what the world does not realize, something that Goliath and the Philistines learned the hard way, David was never the underdog in this fight and he knew the reason for that as well.

The Stone Is Mightier Than The Sword – 1 Samuel 17
  • After the fallout with Saul, Samuel had shut himself in his hometown of Ramah and spent his days mourning for the king of Israel. Though their relationship was going through a rocky patch, Samuel had played an important part in Saul’s life and in the transformation of his heart. Saul even started prophesying soon after his first meeting with Samuel. It was Samuel who anointed Saul to be the first king of Israel and somewhere deep in his heart he might be even blaming himself for Saul’s pivot away from the path of God. We too feel the same when…

Time To Move On – 1 Samuel 16
  • As Jesus was warning His followers about the times of tribulations that were fast approaching, He encouraged them saying that the Holy Spirit will always be by their side throughout the ordeal. When they would be dragged to the synagogues and courts and be on trial before the authorities, they need not worry about what they had to say as the Holy Spirit will defend them. Now amongst the crowds, there were many who would not have understood what Jesus was talking about and one man asked Jesus to settle a dispute that he was having with his brother. “Teacher,…

The Parable of the Wise and the Foolish
  • The failure to follow instructions had already put Saul in hot water as God did not respond to him either through the prophet or through the Urim and the Thummim. Saul was also on the outs with Samuel but after some time had passed, Samuel came to Saul with a message from the Lord. This time the instructions were for Saul to attack the Amalekites and totally destroy the people and all their belongings. This would be justice for what the Amalekites had put the Israelites through when they came up from Egypt. The instructions were crystal clear and left…

    Obedience Over Offerings – 1 Samuel 15
  • On His final trip to Jerusalem, Jesus visited several towns and villages along the way, teaching and healing those who came to Him. His ministry was gathering steam as more and more people started following Him. Jesus’ popularity drew such large crowds that when they were passing through the ancient city of Jericho, a tiny man named Zacchaeus had to climb up a tree just to get a glimpse of Him. When Jesus went with Zacchaeus to his home, it spurred him to disburse his ill-gotten wealth to the poor. Jesus even called Zacchaeus, a tax collector who was deemed…

The Parable of the Ten Minas
  • Now that the relationship between Saul and Samuel had deteriorated beyond repair, he appointed himself a priest from the family line of Eli. Ahijah was the priest who had accompanied Saul’s army in their pursuit of the Philistines and was wearing the ephod that housed the Urim and the Thummim. Saul needed a man of God by his side as Samuel had deserted him for not keeping the command of the Lord. Ahijah perhaps needed Saul even more to establish the legitimacy of his priestly lineage. A lineage that was cut from the grace of God due to the sins…

Panic Sent By God – 1 Samuel 14
  • The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were questioning Jesus’ authority after he had caused a ruckus in the temple. His condemnation of turning the temple into a marketplace was directed at them as they were the ones who had allowed the sellers in the temple. Thereafter, they desperately looked for opportunities to seize and even kill Jesus and the string of Parables that are found in Matthew’s gospel are in response to their schemes. The Parable of the Wedding Banquet, a variation of which is found in Luke’s account as well (Luke 14:16-24) was, Jesus letting the Jewish…

  • The terminologies used in the Bible mostly appear to be the same as defined in the dictionary. But in the real sense, the scripture conveys an idea just opposite to the perceptions of this world. Despite Jesus telling us that “blessed are the meek,” we still believe that the people who have influence, wealth, muscle power, and strength are the people blessed by God. We think that the despised, ignored, and ill-treated people are the cursed people. People misunderstand that they are forsaken by God when their suffering is prolonged. Either people think that the believer’s life should be full…

    Blessed Are The Meek
  • As Jesus was gaining more followers each day, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law sought to use His popularity against Him. They started murmurs about how Jesus was mingling with the wrong crowd and that His followers were nothing but prostitutes and tax collectors, sinners that He should not be associating with. In response, Jesus narrates three parables of things that were lost but were later found. The last of these was the parable of the lost sons as one of them left his father’s house to live in a foreign land, while the other though stayed close…

The Parable of the Lost Sons
  • We are aware of the truth that the glory belongs to the Lord. Even after knowing this, do we attribute the glory to God or give it to something else that dominates our lives. In the days of David, Kings were the glorious people on the earth, and David was also one of them. Despite having the honour on earth as a King, David was able to visualize the Sovereignty of God and attribute all glory to God alone. Does the power and authority that we hold connect us to God or is it disconnecting us from Him because of…

The King of Glory – Psalm 24
  • When Jesus prophesied about the day of the lord and the abomination that causes desolation the disciples were curious to know when would these things come to pass. Like students who constantly ask the invigilator for the time remaining during their examination, we too want to know the exact time of our lord’s coming. We feel if we know the hour of His coming, we would mend our unrighteous ways and get our lives in order to be ready for Him. The disciples would have also exuberated the same confidence when they asked Jesus for the times of his coming.…

The Parable of the Unknown Hour
  • “You will be my witnesses to the ends of the earth,” Jesus told these words to a group of people who knew nothing about geography, as most of them were fishermen who depended for their livelihood on the nearby sea. They were uneducated and did not know how to articulate their thoughts clearly. Moreover, they were frightened and unable to digest the truth that Jesus was going to His Father. They were ignorant of Holy Spirit, who had to come and stay within them and felt like orphans. In this helpless situation, they were asked to receive the power and…

To the Ends of the Earth
  • Once a rich man had come to Jesus asking what he must do to “gain” eternal life. We know that we cannot do anything to gain eternal life or even our salvation as it was freely given to us. But the rich man was persistent and Jesus’ standard answer of following the commandments did not seem satisfactory to him. So Jesus told him to sell off all his possessions, give them to the poor and then follow Him. At this, the rich man went away in sadness as he had a lot of wealth and the thought of parting with…

The Parable of the Labourers in the Vineyard
  • After finishing their meal, Jesus and the disciples sang a hymn and left for a place called Gethsemane. Jesus had come to the earth to accomplish the will of the Father and His ministry of more than three years was culminating to this very day. His soul was overwhelmed with sorrow as the hour of reckoning was drawing closer. He shared His burden with His disciples and asked them to stay awake and pray with Him. Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. “Abba, Father,” he said,…

With Swords and Clubs – Mark 14
  • After Jesus had cleared the temple of the various merchants, He called out the Jewish leaders for turning the house of the Lord into a den of robbers. This did not sit well with the chief priests and the teachers of the law, as they started looking for ways to kill Him. They questioned the authority of Jesus as each religious group sent their representatives to test Him. This is when Jesus told them the “Parable of the Tenants” which builds on the Parable (Song) of the Vineyard found in Isaiah’s book. The Pharisees were well versed with the prophet’s…

The Parable of the Vineyard and the Tenants
  • This is probably one of the few chapters from the Bible that we know by heart. But do we actually know what it means or is it just part of our Sunday school memories? I am not sure that even King David understood it completely as he was simply writing about his life experiences. But unbeknownst to him, God was using David to give us the greatest assurance that we would ever need that He is our Shepherd.

    Our Shepherd – Psalm 23
  • This Psalm portrays the crucifixion of Jesus that occurred centuries after its writing. It is bewildering how David, a Jew by birth, foresaw the Roman practice of killing the criminals by hanging them on a tree. The capital punishment of crucifixion had come to vogue in Rome long after the death of David. Yet this Psalm depicts the act of crucifixion as it was recorded in the Gospels. While David enumerated his sufferings from a human point of view, the Spirit of God pre-recorded the sequence of events that happened during the crucifixion of Jesus. God’s words, which were uttered…

    A Teaser Of Crucifixion – Psalm 22
  • Both Matthew and Mark have placed the Parable of the Sower right after the arrival of the family of Jesus, who came to one of His gatherings to try and put an end to His mission (Mark 3:21). The Jewish leaders had already made up their minds about Him and now His own family was turning against Him. Although Luke places their arrival after this parable, still it was in and around that time that Jesus narrated this parable about a farmer and how it was not his seeds, but the difference in the seeding grounds that produced different results.

    The Parable of the Seeds
  • We are striving hard to survive among various challenges in this earthly life. While we face trouble in our jobs, diseases or arguments with our loved ones, we stop trusting God and trust every other resource of this world. In this pursuit, the thought of ending our lives frequently comes to mind. When we forget that we are the forgiven children of God, we connect sin to every misfortune. Fear creeps into our minds, and we do not want to live anymore in this world. All of us certainly have to die one day, but ending our lives for not…

    The Valley Of Death…
  • The sequence of events that lead up to Jesus narrating the parable of the Wineskins is found in all three synoptic Gospels. There is some ambiguity when it comes to who originally questioned Jesus but this is one of the rare events that was captured in the same chronological order by all three writers. According to Luke, the Pharisees raised the question about fasting while John writes that it was the disciples of John the Baptist asking the question, and Mark does not explicitly mention any particular group but this is the only variation in all their narrations. All of…

    The Parable of the Wineskins
  • Seeing a bunch of caterpillars crawling on the ground, I often used to wonder how does this ugly creature transform into an eye-catching colourful butterfly. People love catching the beautiful winged insect and try to keep them in the palm of their hands but no one wants to touch a caterpillar. God cleanses us by the blood of His Son and has engraved our transformed image in His palm (Isaiah 49:16). When we see a butterfly, we forget its past stage and don’t fully appreciate the process that transforms them but enjoy the outcome of the transformation. When we witness…

    From Caterpillar To Butterfly
  • Found only in the Gospel of Matthew, the Parable of the unmerciful servant, was Jesus teaching His disciples on how to deal with each other’s transgressions with patience, and above all being able to forgive each other just like the Father forgave their sins. The disciples were worried about who would be the greatest in heaven and a sort of competitive environment was beginning to fester within their group. When Jesus was teaching them about forgiving each other it was Peter who once again asked the question that no one dared ask Jesus. He wanted to know how many times…

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant
  • The proximity of the Passover festival temporarily halted the plans of the chief priests and the teachers of the law from scheming and how to secretly arrest and kill Jesus. They were afraid that the capture of Jesus during the time when Jerusalem was already flooded with tourists from the surrounding states, would only diminish their control over the situation and they would be helpless in preventing a riot. They knew that any uprising would cause the Roman government to take away any ounce of sovereignty that was left with the Jewish leaders. Their actions were motivated by self-preservation as…

The Last Supper – Mark 14
  • The world quotes Jesus word’s for turning the other cheek when facing an enemy or persecutor but no one wants to adopt it. Resistance and retaliation appear to be defensive weapons but did not help in defending but ended up avenging ourselves and others. Jesus teaches us not to resist the evil person, which means letting them do whatever harm they would like to do. So is Jesus asking us to lose the battle? Is Jesus changing the trend that the God of the host, who helped His people to win the battles? People think that walking with Jesus is…

    Give In, Not Give Up
  • The story of the Hare and the Tortise is a beloved childhood memory that taught us the contrasting approaches of two different creatures towards the same end goal. Everyone loves an underdog story and while no one expected the underdog to win, the persistent tortoise beat the arrogant hare in the foot race. Moral stories with two polar opposite characters, usually have the underdog come out in a good light. However, when Jesus started the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, no one could have imagined the underdog to end up as the one being ‘Justified’ by God.

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
  • The author captures the responses to the prayers that people had lifted up in the previous Psalm for their King. Are we aware of the changes that God made in the lives of the people for whom we prayed? Often, we do not even remember what we prayed and for whom we prayed. Even if we remember and relate the answers to our prayers, we seldom make it known to the person for whom we have prayed. People offer prayers similar to rituals in their attempts to quench the wrath of God (Isaiah 1:13). Prayer is not a ritual but…

    From The Author’s Desk – Psalm 21
  • One day, the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. They had heard that John (the baptist) had taught his disciples to pray and perhaps wondered why Jesus had not done the same, not realising that Jesus is the answer to all our prayers. So Jesus taught them a prayer which we now call as “Our Lord’s Prayer“. Jesus did not simply give them the words to recite as prayer but also taught them on having the right attitude while praying. The parable of the Audacious Friend serves as the base for the disciples to develop the correct…

The Parable of the Audacious Friend
  • Having established how the teachers of the law devoured the house of the widows but enjoyed the adoration from the elite (Mark 12:39-40), Jesus presented them with an example of what is God looking for in His people. While in the temple, Jesus was observing the crowds putting money into the collection boxes. The wealthy came forward and were donating large sums of money and probably getting the recognition they thought they deserved but Jesus acknowledged a much meagre offering. A poor widow came and put two copper coins into the treasury, giving out of her poverty to God’s temple.…

    The Temple – Mark 13
  • Do we trust God? When we say we trust God, inadvertently, our priorities override our trust in God. When we face catastrophes or unpredictable situations, we wonder why bad things happen to us. And when diagnosed with some terminal disease, we question God did this happen to us. Asking such questions seems natural but in the process, we are questioning the authority of God and losing our integrity. Questioning God is not changing our situation but is wasting our time, all the while mounting tensions in our lives. Some believe that if they do not say their problems out loud…

    Trusting God – Psalm 20
  • Found only in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus narrated the parable of the lost son (prodigal son) and the parable of the dishonest manager (shrewd manager) one after the other. But while the parable of the prodigal son is well known for its theme, the lesser-known parable of the shrewd or dishonest manager has people divided over its obscure message. The audience for the parable of the shrewd manager included both the disciples and the Pharisees present, whom Jesus has addressed right at the end. Following the parable of the prodigal son, Jesus continues on the same theme, as both…

The Parable of the Shrewd Manager
  • After Jesus had cleared the temple of the various merchants, He called out the Jewish leaders for turning the house of the Lord into a den of robbers. This did not sit well with the chief priests and the teachers of the law, as they started looking for ways to kill Him. They questioned the authority of Jesus as each religious group sent their representatives to test Him. This is when Jesus told them the “Parable of the Tenants” which builds on the Parable (Song) of the Vineyard found in Isaiah’s book. The Pharisees were well versed with the prophet’s…

    Evidence Gathering – Mark 12
  • While people are desperately searching for God, they do not realise that His every creation reflects His power. But with modern innovation, people do not find the time to admire the beauty of nature. Innovations are the outcome of one’s inspiration from nature. However, people do not give any regard to nature but are crazy about the innovations it has inspired. We marvel at the innovative technology that enabled us to see each other and have a live conversation using our phones. But we do not have the patience to realize the wisdom of God who sees us in His…

The Law of the LORD – Psalm 19
  • Found only in the Gospel of Luke, this Parable on the surface might seem like a tale of brotherly love, but it has a deeper message behind it.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan
  • As Jesus and His disciples approached Jerusalem for their final trip to the hill city, they came to the familiar town of Bethany on the Mount of Olives. This was a regular halt point for the group as it was home to many of Jesus’ close followers. While preparing to head for Jerusalem, Jesus asked two of His disciples to go into the village ahead of them and get a colt of a donkey that had never been ridden. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’…

    A Grand Entrance – Mark 11
  • What are our accomplishments? Are we accomplishing someone else’s mission or our own? If someone else is selecting our mission, what are we achieving in our lives? Our education major is not selected by us anymore but is dictated by the market demand or maybe our college guidelines. Our jobs have no relevance to our studies. Seeing this trend some might have a question in their minds if they are actually accomplishing the mission for their life? These chaotic conditions prevail in our lives because we let others fix our life’s mission, and never venture to have our own mission.…

    Mission Accomplished
  • Jesus was teaching in the region of Judea as the Pharisees were looking for an opportunity to trap Jesus. They knew about Jesus’ closeness with John the Baptist, who was killed for speaking out against the extramarital affairs of king Herod. They wanted to use this opportunity to try and get Jesus to speak against divorce and bear the wrath of Herod or speak in favour of divorce and get shunned by the Jewish community for going against John. So they came and asked Jesus whether it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife. Jesus knew the trap…

Seizing the Opportunity – Mark 10
  • Often, we are tired of our lives and are drained of all our energy to fight our battles. If metabolism is the chemical reaction in the body’s cells that change food into energy, worshipping God is the spiritual reaction in our soul that changes the word of God into energy. Glorifying God does not mean the worship session of a church service or a revival meeting, but it is about acknowledging God’s glory all throughout our lives. When our food lacks carbohydrates our bodies do not get the required energy. Similarly, our souls die when we do not understand the…

Excited Not Exhausted – Psalm 18
  • With the advancement of medical sciences, diagnosis and subsequent treatment have become quite easy. But in the olden days, people did not have these facilities to identify the specific reason, yet they received healing. It might be because of the pure air quality and organic yields. In this modern age, the air quality has become toxic, and the agricultural fields are filled with artificial fertilizers, loaded with chemicals replacing natural manures to get a better yield. Medical sciences are trying to find medicines to treat the damage that the chemicals have caused in the human body. When improved treatment cures…

  • We consider the naming ceremony as a sacred event and believe that choosing the correct name, brings blessings and success in the lives of our children. As a result, choosing a name has now become even more complicated, as people think that the prosperity of their children depends on their name. Some people name their children after famous people like presidents, leaders, scientists and entrepreneurs, assuming that their names brought those people success and will do the same for their children. In this process, people avoid naming their children after notorious criminals or warmongers. Everyone has a different method of…

  • Almost a week later, Jesus took Peter, James and John and went up to a high mountain. When they were all alone, His appearance transfigured before their very eyes. His clothes became the brightest shade of white, unattainable by any of our earthly dyes. Definitely nothing close to what the disciples could have imagined as Jesus chose to reveal His true glory to the inner circle. The choice of taking only the three is questioned but it was His will that these three might see His transfiguration while at the same moment the other nine struggled to drive a demon…

  • Transparency at every step is imposed by many Government Departments especially, with the law-enforcing departments to curb corruption and injustice. Moreover, the adoption of automation in departments dealing with civil welfare has restricted Government officials from showing favour to someone out of turn because of political pressure or bribery. At the same time, people have the privilege to maintain their privacy or hide the facts, and the police have to obtain a search warrant from an authorized judge to enter their privacy. “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind,to reward each person according to their conduct, according to…

  • Christmas celebrations include singing carols, baking cakes, decorating our houses and of course lighting up the Christmas tree. The children enact the nativity play as we remember the sequence of events that occurred during the birth of Jesus. While we sing the famous carol song “Joy to the world,” can we see the present world in joy as the outcome of the birth of Jesus? We have traded the joy of the birth of Jesus for meaningless celebrations, as the whole world joins in our celebrations only to have fun. When opportunists understood that this season makes all sects of…

    The Incarnation
  • According to the Gospel of John, by receiving the Son of God, whom the Father had sent, we have become the children of God. The Gospel explains this further, as children born not of natural descent, a human decision, or a husband’s will, but born of God (John 1:13). Even the children of natural descendants are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him (Psalms 127:3). God created Adam in His image with the intention of bringing up God-fearing offspring. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he…

  • This idiom, “a contented mind is a perpetual feast”, tells us the benefit of contentment. King Solomon recorded a similar theme in a different way saying that the cheerful heart has a continual feast (Proverbs 15:15). The cheerfulness of our heart depends on the fulfilment of our heart’s desires. If our cheerfulness is the outcome of accomplishing our evil desires, then our hearts can not be contented. But we will be longing for the fulfilment of our heart’s evil desires more and more as the days go on. There will be no end to it, and we will gradually lose…

    The Contentment – Psalm 16
  • We all know that our future lays in the hands of our Sovereign God. The psalmist even wrote that “My times are in your hands” (Psalms 31:15), and Paul brought out the fact that God has marked out His people’s appointed times in history along with the boundaries of their lands (Acts 17:26). Our God is Almighty, and He is El Shaddai. He has created everything, and without Him, nothing was made that has been made. Surprisingly, God did not want to have dominion over all His creations alone, but He delegated it to us, whom He created in His…

    Who Holds our Future
  • While reading this Psalm, we should go back to the Old Testament times where people were afraid of God, and they did not even pronounce the word Yahweh, but only wrote it down to express His name. When the chief priests entered into the inner room with the blood he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed, he always had a question of survival in his mind. Because if he was unholy, he might possibly die in the presence of God. When Moses went to the mountain top to receive the commandments from God, God asked…

    The Survival – Psalm 15
  • In the beginning, God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light amidst the darkness. From where did this darkness come? Does it exist on its own or is there any other power than God has that has birthed it? The Gospel of John explains the role of our Sovereign God in creating all that is visible and invisible in the universe. The light has got such power, that darkness could not overcome it. In other words, only in the absence of light, the dark survives, and when the light flashes, it disappears.

    The Night is Coming….
  • The Gospel of John does not share any similarities with the other Synoptic Gospels, but this unique account of the life of Christ has a completely different purpose. Written by most probably John, the disciple, during the latter half of the first century to a predominantly Gentile audience of the Greco-Roman city of Ephesus, its accounts are completely different than the other Gospels. The author does not care about the timings of these events and does not follow any chronological order. As a result, we read about the marriage in Cana which is described as the first miracle but it…

  • This Psalm focuses on the unceasing surveillance of God on each one of us, whoever we may be or wherever we are. In public places, we often find stickers informing us that we are under surveillance. Surveillance cameras are used to deter people from anti-social elements such as shoplifting or attempting to escape from prison. Even in tight security areas, surveillance cameras fail to keep a vigil on the entire place because of certain blind spots. But for God, there are no blind spots, and His eyes penetrate to see the things lying in the hearts of every person. But,…

    Surveillance – Psalm 14
  • Two days after gathering His disciples, Jesus arrived at a wedding in a place called Cana in the region of Galilee. During the festivities, Jesus’s mother brought a matter of concern to Him saying that the wedding party had run out of wine. Of all the requests brought before Jesus, this would have been the most trivial of the lot.

The New Wine – John 2
  • Jesus did not answer their demands by giving them a sign immediately but foretold about His own death and resurrection that will be the ultimate sign of His authority given to everyone.

The New Temple – John 2
  • Everyone knows John 3:16 by heart but the next verse is equally important, for Jesus did not come to condemn us but save us. If he wanted to condemn us for our wrongdoings, He would have brought the day of judgment upon us but rather He came with the sole intention to be an atonement for our sins.

    The Light – John 3
  • The living water represents His Spirit in us who gives us the joy that comes from knowing that our sins are forgiven. The joy in our hearts that gives us a new life, a new beginning with the knowledge that the slate has been wiped clean. That is what Jesus has to offer.

The Living Water – John 4
  • Quite ironical that the Jews , through whom the salvation was to come rejected the Messiah but the ‘pagan’ Samaritans were the first to proclaim Jesus as the Savior of the world. Jesus revealed His true identity in this Samaritan town, something that He would not do in the Jewish towns.

The Savior of the World – John 4
  • During one of Jesus’ trips to Jerusalem, He encounters a man sitting by the poolside at Bethesda waiting for healing when the Healer himself came to him.

    The Healer – John 5
  • Once again Jesus had riled up the Jewish leaders simply by giving a man the ability to pick up his mat and walk as they started questioning His authority.

The Son of God – John 5
  • Just like satan blinded the eyes of those disciples who abandoned Jesus that day, he is doing the same even today for the believers who are satisfied with eating the symbolic bread and wine and will never desire to taste the Bread of Life.

The Bread of Life – John 6
  • Jesus came alone to Jerusalem and stood out in the crowd, He did not wait for the consensus to be formed about Him before He spoke out against the leaders. By the power of God, He took a stand against the leaders who had diluted the Gospel and made it a religion. Are we waiting for a consensus in our lives or are willing to stand out for God?

The Son of David – John 7
  • Jesus saved the adulterous woman from being stoned and did not condemn her. But now the crowds had picked up the stones once again, this time, to kill Jesus.

    The Great I Am – John 8
  • While the Pharisees were focused on their quest to crucify the Messiah, Jesus continued to walk on the path that God had set before Him, touching yet another life on His way to Calvary. As Jesus and His disciples were walking the streets of Jerusalem, they saw a man who had been blind from birth. The disciples could not help but pass judgement and wanted Jesus to weigh in on who is responsible for this man’s condition, his parents or he himself.

The Man They Call Jesus – John 9
  • Jesus deemed the pharisees guilty of sin as they were not blind but refused to change their ways. Another argument between Jesus and the pharisees ensued ending up with Jesus revealing another aspect of His identity by comparing himself to a shepherd.

The Good Shepherd – John 10
  • The raising of Lazarus would be a precursor to His own resurrection from the grave on the third day. We have read that He had raised at least two people from the dead but they had not been in the grave for four days. The disciples and the Jews gathered around this tragedy, would soon be the witnesses to Jesus’ big reveal, that He indeed is the Resurrection and the Life.

The Resurrection and the Life – John 11
  • The festival of Passover was approaching and the hill city of Jerusalem would soon see an influx of pilgrims to the holy land and its neighbouring towns. Jesus also made the trip to Judea one last time, just six days before His crucifixion. On His way to Jerusalem, He visited His followers in the nearby town of Bethany where He had raised Lazarus back to life.

The Intimate Friend – John 12
  • Jesus did not have a large following in Jerusalem but His followers were those who had seen him in their own hometowns and were in the city just for the festivities. It is very easy to get swept by the atmosphere of our surroundings and people started joining in the chants even though many of them would have only known hearsay about Christ and not realized His true purpose.

The King of Israel – John 12
  • Jesus has one last meal with His disciples before His arrest, followed by a lightning-fast trial that would lead Him to the cross the very next day. But His work among His disciples was not done, as He continued to enlighten them with His teachings during what is now known as His Last Supper.

The Servant King – John 13
  • In rejecting Jesus as the Messianic King, the Jewish leaders proved that they did not understand the very scriptures they were reading and teaching others. Satan had blinded their eyes in the name of religion and in their efforts to hold on to their traditions, they failed to accept the greatest Gift from God. Jesus wanted to highlight His rejection to prepare the disciples for the persecution that was coming their way.

    The Betrayed – John 13
  • In rejecting Jesus as the Messianic King, the Jewish leaders proved that they did not understand the very scriptures they were reading and teaching others. Satan had blinded their eyes in the name of religion and in their efforts to hold on to their traditions, they failed to accept the greatest Gift from God. Jesus wanted to highlight His rejection to prepare the disciples for the persecution that was coming their way.

    The Comforter – John 14
  • After answering the questions and doubts that the disciples had brought forward, Jesus uses the illustration of a vine and its branches to help the disciples understand how they are connected to the Father through Him. Throughout the Old Testament, illustrations involving vine usually denoted the Israelites and their failure to comply with God’s instructions. However, Jesus describes Himself as the true Vine with God as the gardener and the disciples His branches. We are all connected to God through Jesus who has bridged the gap between us through His sacrifice on the cross. If we remain in Him we…

    The Vine – John 15 & 16
  • While the other Gospel writers have focused on the events that took place in the Garden, John takes a step back and tells us the events before they reached the Garden. Jesus’ longest recorded prayer came just moments before His capture as He prays for Himself, for His disciples and for everyone who will ever believe in His name. As His hour of crucifixion was fast approaching, Jesus prayed to His Father that He may be glorified and said that the Father has given the Son authority over all people that we may have eternal life through Him. Jesus is…

    The Glorified – John 17
  • After finishing His prayer, Jesus left with His disciples and crossed the Kidron valley. Here, there was a garden where Jesus would often meet with His disciples. Judas, who knew about this place, brought with him the chief priests and Pharisees, along with a detachment of soldiers to the garden where Jesus and the disciples had gathered. The soldiers were brought to stop a possible riot that could ensue when the Pharisees and chief priests arrested Jesus. They were armed with weapons and carried torches and lanterns perhaps to correctly identify the rogue Rabbi in the dark of the night.…

    The Arrested – John 18
  • Pilate made one last attempt to convince the Jews as he found no basis for a charge against Jesus. But the Jewish leaders insisted that Jesus had broken their laws by claiming to be the Son of God. Pilate who did not know what to make of this case was even more afraid now and went back inside to talk to Jesus. He tried questioning Jesus but got no response from Him. Pilate claimed to have the power to free Jesus. To which Jesus replied “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from…

The Sin Bearer – John 19
  • Often we are reduced to our basic understanding of who Christ is. We are not able to fathom the extent of His power when we experience His wondrous works in our lives. Some even try to rationalise His supernatural intervention using medical sciences, their good fortunes and even their wit that gave them a way out of their problems. Mary and the other women who witnessed the empty tomb would have often heard Jesus talk about this day, but when the day finally arrived they were puzzled.

    The Messiah – John 20
  • Peter and John were the two disciples who experienced Jesus’ trial up close and were also the first of the disciples to reach the tomb of Jesus only to find it empty. Perhaps this is why we are given a short epilogue at the end of John’s account to tie up the loose ends with regards to the two friends. A sort of “where are they now” special, to help the readers connect the dots between Peter’s denial and his being the face of the Jesus movement, and John’s transformation from being the son of thunder to the meticulous writer…

    The Epilogue – John 21
  • During His time in the gentle region, there was another large gathering which caused Jesus to have compassion over the people. Again due to the remoteness of the place, there was no way to feed everyone who had gathered. Jesus asked His disciples to gather up all the bread and fish that they could find and gave thanks for them and told them to distribute among the people. They were about four thousand people present that day who were fed as a result of this miracle but the hearts of the disciples seemed to become more and more calloused as…

The Bread and the Yeast – Mark 8
  • We deep clean our homes usually before the holiday season because we want to keep our dwelling place cosy and comfortable. This type of deep cleaning can only be done by us than any hired help, as we know the usual hangout spots of dust bunnies and clutter in our homes. We are keen on presenting our home spotless to our friends and family. During the festival of the Jewish Passover, Jesus cleansed the temple court to facilitate the visitors with a clean surrounding. No one else was bothered to clean it during that festive season, and they treated the…

    Holiday Cleaning
  • Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone (Deuteronomy 34:7). The Vision Council of America claims that about 75 percent of the adult population worldwide uses vision correction products, and 64 percent wear glasses. It means that 75 percent of the adult population worldwide realized that they need correction for their vision. How many of us realize that we need to enhance our spiritual eye-sight, to know God and His ways. How many of us have taken corrective measures to our spiritual sight. The scripture tells us…

Give Light To My Eyes – Psalm 13
  • From its very inception, the institution of Marriage was supposed to unite two individuals to serve God as one body. Over the years, mankind, especially the forefathers and other leaders have had a hand in corrupting this sacred union. Marriage became a means to bear offspring and not a way for its members to unite with the goal of connecting with God. Paul addresses the earlier queries that the congregation had with regard to sexual immorality. While Paul’s instructions to the Corinthians on the subject of marriage may seem like a concession but given how quickly the Institutions (both Church…

    The Institution of Marriage
  • Jesus’ popularity had garnered so many admirers that the pharisees in Jerusalem simply could not ignore Him anymore. The scribes and the teachers of the law were sent to the region to keep a close watch on this new man of God that seemingly had the whole northern country of Galilee buzzing with excitement. They started following Jesus and His disciples everywhere and constantly questioned him on His teachings, His understanding of the laws and His adherence to their customs. Seeing that the disciples were not following one of their traditions of ceremonial washing of the hands and feet before…

The Defiled Are Welcome – Mark 7
  • Can we say that our words are flawless? Flawless not with respect to our grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, or even correct usage but about what is in our hearts. Our mouth speaks what we have in our heart, and that is why Bible says that for a fool, it is better not to open his mouth, else his foolishness will be revealed (Proverbs 24:7). The Psalmist brought out the skill of the wicked in hiding their evil motives stored in their hearts, with sugar quoted words. No matter how perfect their skills may be, God revealed their wickedness to David despite…

    Flawless Word – Psalm 12
  • In the Old Testament, we see many occasions of restorations such as restoration of hope, of families, and even of kingdoms. We need hope for restoring the things we have lost, especially hope in God. Once, David had lost his family and the families of his warriors, which resulted in hostility from his supporters. Even in this worst situation, David did not lose hope in God (1 Samuel 30:6). As a result, God restored everything that he had lost. Even today, if we want to get back the things we have lost, we have to trust God. Usually, we lose…

    Restoration
  • Having raised the daughter of a prominent synagogue leader, Jesus returned to His hometown of Nazareth and was given a chance to speak in His own synagogue. Those who had gathered were amazed at His teaching and were beginning to question His origins. Where had He learned everything? Isn’t he the son of the carpenter? Isn’t He the son of Mary, the brother of our friends? What gave Him access to such knowledge or the right to preach in our synagogue?

Prophet Without Honor – Mark 6
  • After the ordeal that the disciples faced in the lake, Jesus brought them to the other side, to a place that they perhaps had never visited ever before in their lives. That day they were about to witness three completely different but equally astonishing miracles in the lives of ordinary people like them. Ordinary by the standard of this world but by Jesus’ standard these three were children of God. The first stop was in the region Gerasenes, which was also known as Decapolis (a region comprising of ten cities). This was predominately a Gentile region that knew little about…

    The Restorer – Mark 5
  • When we learn our multiplication tables by heart during our formative years, we would recite them from start to end in order to arrive at the product of two numbers. In due course, we understood the concept of multiplication, and without reciting the entire table, were capable of solving the multiplication problem instantly. We all know the Lord’s Prayer by heart and recite it as often as possible. As we recite this prayer again and again, are we able to reach out to God to solve the multifaceted problems of our lives? The more we understand the concept of this…

    Our Lord’s Prayer
  • After His confrontation with the Pharisees, Jesus once again went to the lakeside to reveal the secrets of heaven. He got into the boat and narrated a string of parables focusing on the word of God. There is even a practical application of His teachings as at the end of this sermon on the boat, Jesus asked His disciples to go out to the sea where they faced storms like they had never faced before and their faith in Jesus is tested.

The Sermon on the Boat – Mark 4
  • When watching a nature documentary we realise that even though big cats like lions and tigers are ferocious killing machines, their hunts are usually covert operations. A tiger uses its skin pigmentation to hides among the tall grasses and patiently waits for its hunt. Watching a pack of deers enter its field of vision, would be a mouth-watering prospect for sure, but it still waits for the deer to be separated from its group. Only when the deer is alone perhaps drinking water with its back turned does the tiger pounces on its prey. For an animal who is starving…

The Case Against Jesus – Mark 3
  • Usually, we ask this kind of question, “how then can you say to me?” to a person who has levied some wild accusation against us. It is not a question but an answer to a baseless argument. The aggressive form of this question is “How dare you say that to me”. It conveys the meaning that the other person knows nothing about us. When Jesus prayed to His Father to forgive His killers, He prayed that they do not know what they were doing because they neither know me nor my authority. In a situation like a betrayal, we ask…

How Then Can You Say To Me – Psalm 11
  • Faith can work wonders and bring us even the unexpected. The men had brought their friend to Jesus to make his life on earth easier but by forgiving his sins, Jesus made his eternity better. Jesus knows the heart and he knew what was in the paralyzed man’s heart. When someone around us gets blessed, we try to equate their past actions and try to justify their path to their blessing not knowing anything about their relationship with God. People would have written off the paralysed man as a sinner but Jesus forgave his sins as He looks at the…

The God of Sinners – Mark 2
  • The past year has pushed everyone to experience a different lifestyle of working from home, leaving aside the hassles of getting ready on time and travelling a long way in traffic. Initially, people found it difficult because of their lifelong habit of coming to the office.

    Meeting Together
  • Although the other Gospel writers, place the arrest of John the Baptist much later, Mark starts his account of Jesus’s ministry after John had been put in prison. On hearing about the arrest of John, Jesus proclaims to His followers that the time has come. The political leaders of Israel were cognizant of the role that the chief priests, Rabbis and even prophets played in keeping the peace. Throughout the Gospel, we read how the Pharisees wanted to prevent an uprising, the very reason they gave to put Jesus on the cross. But the imprisonment of John, a prominent prophet…

The Good News – Mark 1
  • In 1994, UNESCO earmarked 5th October as World Teachers’ Day to garner attention on the profession and the welfare of those who have dedicated their lives to the teaching profession. The main motive of these celebrations is promoting the idea of “Education for All.” Similarly, every child of God is responsible for spreading the Good News that “Christ Died for All”. For a follower of Jesus, teaching is not a profession, but a way of life. Jesus, while he was in this world, taught people the truth about His kingdom through parables. It was His way of life, and He…

    The Greatest Teacher
  • While the accounts of Luke and Matthew tried to capture the early years of Jesus, Mark jumps starts his version from the start of Jesus’s ministry. Since Mark only knew what he heard in the sermons of Peter, Paul and the other apostles, his account seems like a fast-tracked version of Jesus’s ministry. His Gospel often does not match with the chronology followed by the other writers and focuses only on revealing the identity of Jesus as the Messiah and not so much on the minor details that are included in other accounts. Amidst the impending persecution of the Roman…

The Greatest Hits Gospel – Mark (Prologue)
  • God loves all of us unconditionally, and those who rely upon the conditional love as defined by laws and its regulations are sustained by His grace till they experience the unconditional love of God.

    Grace Above Everything
  • The modern world runs on the philosophy which states that we should never settle for anything less than what we deserve. That’s the motto of every tech company as well as what they higlight when launching their ‘new and improved’ version of the same device, hoping to make an impression on their potential consumers. In the corporate world, attaining a level of satisfaction is labelled as complacency.

    Never Settle
  • While we pray for our protection and blessings, we often forget to pray for the oppressed in our society. While we are ignorant of other’s sufferings, our suffering appears as a big mountain. We might be thinking that people who do not have any problem can only address the issues found in another’s life. For most of his life, David lived a life of a fugitive, yet he was able to visualize the plight of the fatherless and the oppressed. The servant girl of Naaman who was in captivity did not wait for her liberty to tell about the healing…

Prayer for the Oppressed – Psalm 10
  • Thanking each other is the best etiquette in our society, and it encourages a person to give their best. It is an act of showing the person who helped us that we have identified or realized their kindness.

Thank You Lord – Psalm 9
  • Peter and Andrew left their nets and followed Jesus to fulfil the desire of His Father. However, these followers depended on what they saw and failed to visualize the unseen God, who had sent Jesus to this world.

    Follow Me
  • Nature reveals the wondrous work of God, but unfortunately, we do not have the time to admire His creations. The wise of the earth are known for their inventions and their masterpieces, while the creator of heaven and earth is an unsung hero.

The Glory of God – Psalm 8
  • Taking refuge in God is a unique experience. In a worldly context, taking refuge is about staying in the refugee camps or a rehabilitation centre. People staying at a rehabilitation centre do not need to carry a shield, but the people at the battlefield need to have a shield.

    Our Refuge – Psalm 7
  • We instinctively look for the approval of others but do not like their disapproval or corrections. Criticisms, though intended to be constructive, often discourages us and even pushes us to the extreme of withdrawing from our missions. Till the time we do not realize our mistakes, we won’t be ready for corrections.

Do Not Rebuke Me – Psalm 6
  • People live in vanity, and they want to show off things that they do not have and do not want to disclose the things they have. A poor person tries to present himself as a rich person, whereas a rich one does not care for such a presentation. A coward speaks much of his imaginary brave acts, while the brave keep quiet. A self-righteous person behaves like a righteous one, while the righteous do not reveal their spiritual standard. People build up false images and hide behind these lies to make a convent with death.

Shelter to Shadow – Psalm 91
  • At the pool of Bethesda, Jesus met an invalid man and asked if he wanted to be healed. A weird question to ask someone who had been patiently waiting for thirty-eight years to receive his healing. But Jesus’ words always have a purpose and putting it in the right context helps us understand its true meaning.

Do You Want to Be Redeemed?
  • The opening words of this Psalm highlights the confidence that David has in his relationship with God. To attract the attention of a person who is listening to many, we say “Listen to me.” Children use the technique of crying to attract their parent’s attention. The opening words of this Psalm also resemble the action of an adamant grown-up child persistently irritating his parent by repeatedly asking them to grant permission.

Listen to my Words – Psalm 5
  • On the first Easter morn, the disciples were all terrified as they were hearing mixed news about their leader whom the Roman officials had killed just a couple of days ago. A narrative unique to the gospel of Luke, lets us know about two followers of Christ who were traveling back to the nearby town of Emmaus. They probably came to the city of Jerusalem following Jesus to celebrate the Passover festival, but now having lost their leader, were returning back to their hometown. They would have had a lot of questions surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus especially given the…

Emmaus – Have You Been There?
  • Jesus entered the holy places carrying His blood to secure our eternal redemption. The blood of Jesus shed on the cross sanctifies our conscience from dead works so that we may serve the Living Lord forever and ever as our eternal redemption is secured.

    Our Eternal Redemption Secured
  • Faith Or Fear

    7–11 minutes

    ·

    ·

Fear always chases faith to weaken its strength. No one in this world can say that they do not understand what fear is. We are all driven by fear in some areas of our lives. Fear gives us restlessness and steals our confidence. With fear, we are not able to arrive at the right decision at the right time, but it leads us to the wrong decisions.

    Faith Or Fear
  • The creations reveal the existence of the Creator and the way they function projects the knowledge of the sovereign God. Somehow, many do not reach out to this ultimate truth, but they restrict themselves from this understanding by focusing only on the creations.

    Parables and Paraphrases
  • The Philistines had all their soldiers and chariots, “numerous as the sands of the seashore”, and the Israelites were running scared and running out of places to hide. Somehow Saul managed to muster up his troops who were still quaking in fear. He patiently waited seven days for Samuel to arrive and perform his priestly obligations, but after waiting for so long in fear, he finally gave up on waiting for Samuel and performed the offertory ceremony himself. I’ve often asked myself, why was Samuel late and why does Saul after having waited for seven days couldn’t wait a few…

    Saul’s Haste – 1 Samuel 13
  • In today’s context, this Psalm reminds me of a telephonic conversation with our friends and relatives. After changing our phone numbers, many would not recognize us, as the number does not appear on their phone-book.

Answer Me When I Call – Psalm 4
  • Just as the women were hurrying from the tomb filled with mixed emotions of fear and joy, they came face to face with the one they were looking for. Jesus Himself was standing in front of them and they fell at His feet and began to worship Him.

The Son of God! – Matthew 27-28
  • “Don’t be over-righteous” is a familiar caution often given to those who seek God in truth. These are from ‘well-wishers’ who tell their fellow brothers and sisters to attend a Sunday Service and discourage them from involving in spiritual activities like meaningful Bible Studies, Outreach Ministries or Personal Devotion. They are satisfied with what they hear in the Sunday sermons and want others to be satisfied with that without ever reading the Word of God.

    Don’t be Over-Righteous
  • Through each character of the Bible, God wants to teach us some valuable lesson so that we may enter His kingdom without having to succumb to our life situations. The element of evil seen in Judas Iscariot’s life is a common sin called greed. None of us can boldly say that we are not greedy. Judas’s life may teach us how not to be entangled in sin through greed and how to come out of it.

    Judas Iscariot – The Betrayer
  • In his farewell speech Samuel recounted all the good that God had done for His people and how they had always reciprocated His grace on them with betrayal at every corner. He warned them not to test the anger of the Lord and reminded them of all the destruction that came upon them when they walked away from God and held on to their precious idols.

    A King is Crowned – 1 Samuel 11&12
  • The chief priest and the elders started making plans to have Jesus executed. They bound Him and handed him over to the Roman governor Pilate, as executions were under Roman jurisdiction.

The King of The Jews – Matthew 27
  • Israel’s desire to be like other nations led them to reject God and have a mortal human ascend the throne. Samuel was handed the task of finding Israel a new king, one that would lead them to battles. Among the twelve tribes of Israel, the tribe of Benjamin was one of the smallest with a history of seditious revolt against the other eleven tribes. However, God’s ways are unfathomable to us, as no one would have expected the first king of Israel to come from the tribe of Benjamin.

    The Hunt for a King – 1 Samuel 9-10
  • We are certainly all-in when we can see Jesus working miracles in our lives. But our faith gets shaken when we cannot see His works and start doubting even the existence of God. If our faith is based on the works of God in our lives then we will not go far with Him but like a drug addict keep coming back to Him only when we run out of money/blessings. Peter was still immature and did not understand what his response should be when Jesus foretold his denial.

The Faithless Faithfuls – Matthew 26
  • The Israelites put away all their gods and gave their loyalty to Yahweh, but a plot to overthrow their eternal king was soon to enter their minds.

    Israel Rejects God – 1 Samuel 6-8
  • The chief priests and the elders were assembling in the palace of the high priest, Caiaphas, and were trying to figure out the best way to dispose of Jesus. They were looking for a way to secretly kill Jesus without riling up His followers. When they were perplexed and could not find a way to dispose of with the Jesus problem, satan presented them with an opportunity that they quickly grabbed on to.

    The Defector – Matthew 26
  • In the Bible we see people like Cain, Jacob and Martha getting diverted by their family members. People who are close to our heart can hurt us more than strangers. We won’t remember the abusive language used against us in yesterday’s traffic jam but we won’t be able to forget a simple statement given against us by our kith. Satan knows how to use the people around us to dishearten us.

Deliver me, my God! – Psalm 3
  • The Israelites mourned that the Ark had departed from them but the Glory had long been departed from their midst.

    The Glory Departs – 1 Samuel 4-5
  • For many of us have been given lamps but only few are wise enough to carry the extra oil that is needed to keep our flame alive.

The Sheep & The Goats – Matthew 25
  • As soon as Jesus was baptized, the Spirit of God led him to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. The primary temptations are that the devil wants us to prove to him that we are the children of God. This precious relationship is personal between us and our God. Repeatedly. the devil asked Jesus to prove his relationship with His Father, but Jesus firmly denied to prove it to the devil.

    Led By The Spirit
  • Eli was a Levite from the priestly clan of Israel and was used by God to lead Israel for forty years. But along the way something happened in his life that He had started taking the Lord for granted and not payed heed to His warnings.

Eli Rejected, Samuel Accepted – 1 Samuel 2-3
  • As the fig tree can let us know if summer is nigh, similarly the signs of the end of days would let us know that Christ’s coming is near.

The Summer is Near – Matthew 24
  • After stumping the Pharisees with His question, Jesus proceeded to call them out on all their wrongdoings.

The Hypocrisy of the Pharisees – Matthew 23
  • For all the accounts of great wars and conquests recorded in the book of Samuel, it still starts with the story of humble beginnings from a lowly town in the hill country of Ephraim.

    Humble Beginnings – 1 Samuel 1
  • Jesus came with the purpose of introducing or reintroducing God to everyone, those who loved Him and even those who hated Him. The questioning session that the Pharisees and the Sadducees had been using to unmask Jesus before His followers, turned into Jesus revealing the identity as the Messiah.

God of the Living – Matthew 22
  • The Psalmist asks the offenders to take refuge in God and says that if the rulers of the earth will turn faithful to the incredible love of God, then righteousness will come upon them from heaven.

Kiss the Son – Psalm 2
  • Jesus came down to extend the invitation of His Father’s banquet to everyone as Israel had rejected and rebelled against God by prostituting themselves to the pagan cultures that surrounded them.

The Invitation is Extended to Everyone – Matthew 22
  • Our society has both wicked and righteous people. Both of them share the same arena to earn their livelihood. The wicked will always be with us in the form of our neighbours, colleagues, friends and relatives who distort us from fulfilling the purpose of God in our lives.

The Wicked And The Righteous – Psalms 1
  • The fallout from the temple clearing incident perhaps did not sit well with the chief priests and the elders as surely that would have opened the eyes of the people to the corruption that had infiltrated the walls of the temple.

The Son has the Ultimate Authority – Matthew 21
  • Kings would usually come back from wars to triumphant welcome by their countrymen. These lavish parades would have the valuables plundered in their latest victory along with the procession of the prisoners of the war who were going to be humiliated and tortured by the locals. The kings would always choose a warhorse or a prized camel, to make their grand entrance back to their palace rather than riding on a colt and that too of a donkey.

The King comes Home – Matthew 21
  • God teaches us to show sympathy towards others, and sometimes He allows us to go through pain to understand other’s pain so that we may sympathetically pray for their remedy. At the same time, we should expect God to show His compassion to us rather than expecting pity from others.

    The True Empathizer
  • Christ came to save us from our own sins but did not come to start a religion to help us save ourselves. The world around us has done its best to try and subvert the true meaning of Christmas from us.

    The True Meaning of Christmas
  • While there are different opinions about the time of the birth of Jesus, we should also know the origins of Christmas. When people gathered in great numbers to celebrate the birth of Jesus, this was named Christmas during the late twelfth century, with its literal meaning being Christ’s Mass. With the coining of the name Christmas, the noble theme of God’s love has been distorted with some fictional characters of fantasies.

    Christmas Celebrations
  • In this chapter we see three separate instances of people’s selfishness as they tried to prevent others from receiving what they already had.

Share the Love – Matthew 20
  • Let us learn from the bitter experience of Paul and his fellowship with the Corinthians that we should not depend on human beings for love and compassion but on God for His grace and mercy.

Till We Meet Again – 1 Corinthians 16
  • Depending on our fellow believers will only get us so far and might even lead us away from God. The only way to defeat death is to depend on the heavenly man and follow His path.

    The Heavenly Man – 1 Corinthians 15
  • The purpose of group worship is to gather together and praise God. If the purpose was for each one to talk to God personally, that could have been done from the comfort of their homes.

Order in the Church – 1 Corinthians 14
  • With the growing thirst for Spiritual Gifts among the church at Corinth, Paul points out the greatest gift that they all needed in their lives, something greater than any other gift and without which all other gifts are worthless.

    Christ is Love – 1 Corinthians 13
  • Being a relatively new church, the Corinthians had lot of queries regarding their order of worship. One of the main concerns was the mystery that surrounded the spiritual gifts given to the members by the Spirit. They saw these gifts as a means to create a hierarchical order between themselves rather than using it for the purpose that God intended.

One Spirit Many Gifts – 1 Corinthians 12
  • Our Remembrance of Jesus’s sacrifice should not be only on Sundays when we are standing in the communion line but throughout the week and should be reflected in everything we do.

    In Remembrance – 1 Corinthians 11
  • Amidst criticism, Prosperity Gospel still survives because there are people who need that kind of gospel. All of us love to be blessed, and we speculate and await our turn. Various schemes are devised to derive blessings, such as blessings through prayers, blessings through partnership or membership, blessings through donations or offerings, and blessings through anointed oil, handkerchiefs and servants of God.

    Bless And Be Blessed
  • As the church in Corinth continues to struggle with the rampant sexual immorality, Paul tries to rein in the congregation by taking them back to the very purpose of creation. After dealing with cases of unfaithfulness among the men and women in the church, Paul tries to take a step back and addresses the need for discipline in hopes of bringing back order to the worship in the church.

    Complete Surrender – 1 Corinthians 11
  • In his letters to the believers in Corinth, Paul not only addresses the failures of the church but also addresses the allegations levelled against him. When immorality is allowed to take the driver seat in a church, it will try its best to bring down the workers of God. If Paul’s ego would have been hurt with these allegations, then he would have left the fellowship of the church at Corinth and immorality would have won. But Paul stays and defends his choices saying, This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me. 1 Corinthians 9:3 Paul…

For the Sake of the Gospel – 1 Corinthians 9-10
  • Corinth being a melting pot of cultural diversity, made it hard for the new believers to separate themselves from the pagan traditions that surrounded them. One such issue that Paul tries to address is eating of meat that was sacrificed to the pagan gods. Since only part of the animal was used for sacrificial purposes, the remaining portion was sold and consumed by the people. Either this meat was sold for cheap which tempted meat lovers or maybe there was no easy way of buying kosher meat in Corinth during those days. This was brought before Paul, perhaps so that…

    A Stumbling Block – 1 Corinthians 8-10
  • From its very inception, the institution of Marriage was supposed to unite two individuals to serve God as one body. Over the years mankind, especially the forefathers and other leaders have had a hand in corrupting this sacred union. Marriage became a means to bear offspring and not a way for its members to unite in their sole purpose to connect with God. However, Paul’s instructions to the Corinthians on the subject of marriage may seem like a concession rather than the norm.

    A Corrupted Institution – 1 Corinthians 7
  • The people of Corinth had started corrupting the greatest temple of the Lord, their own bodies and Paul sought to make them realize the gravity of their actions.

    The New Temple – 1 Corinthians 6
  • Paul started addressing specific incidents that deeply troubled him because of how sexual immorality was running rampant in the church of Corinth. He cites one particular incident of a congregation member who was having sexual relations with his father’s wife, perhaps a callback for us of how Reuben slept with his father’s wife.

    The Evil Within – 1 Corinthians 5
