Starts and Ends – Hillsong United

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30

This song seems to stem from the above verses. These verses are spoken by Jesus who calls all the weary and burdened to Him and in turn assures rest, for our souls. Often, we find ourselves in this situation and our soul thirsts for a lot of things which we might not even understand, and we don’t even need to understand, because we have a comforter who can comfort us, our souls, and we receive abundant peace that passeth all understanding.

The words of this song are easily relatable, each of us would have had at least one instance when we would have felt that there is no solution to anything, there is no hope, as the words say “when real life and peace won’t make amends”. We would have also felt each start like an end in itself, everything scattering, but there is a ray of hope for us, our Shepherd and High priest who watches over us and is in control of everything.

All we need to do is, just go to Him, our soul would find rest, even in an unimaginable scenario because we have His grace from the blood He shed for us. We don’t have to dwell on our past mistakes, failures, hurts or anything which the devil uses to put us down, we just have to go to Him as we are. He gave His life for us, He has already taken up our shame and guilt. He came into this world, took up our burdens just to redeem us.

Let us lay our burdens on Him and not carry them with us, as He is our every good thing, much more than we could fathom. He is someone whose love and sacrifice we can’t explain, and He is our alpha and omega who knows us inside out. He wouldn’t want to do anything without our will, but when we go to Him, taste His love, we can understand that our soul has found rest.

VERSE 1:
My soul thirsts for things I can’t explain

In my bones a beckoning to pray

If my heart is a battleground

My defences run both ways

The flesh is a beggar and thief

But there is a Spirit-man awakening me

VERSE 2:
When real life and peace won’t make amends

When all these starts

Start feeling like these ends

Like the world is unravelling

And I’m bound to come undone

There is a Shepherd a Priest

There is a Comforter who comforts me

REFRAIN:

And my soul finds rest

Where it makes no sense

There the blood sets me free

All my old regrets

All my brokenness

All my failures redeemed

And it feels like grace

Where I stacked my shame

There the cross stands for me

All the things I’ve done

All the times I’ve run

All my dead ends redeemed

And it looks like hope

Where my heart was broke

And His heart broke for me

BRIDGE:
Lay your burden down upon

Down upon Him

Lay your burden down

PRE-CHORUS:
Jesus my rest in peace

My reconciler

You’re my every good thing

REFRAIN:
I surrender all

All I’m living for

You’re my every good thing

You’re my amnesty

You’re my split wide sea

You’re my every good thing

All my days and nights

You’re my death to life

You’re the wonder I breathe

You’re my can’t explain

First and last refrain

You’re my every good thing
