When I heard this song for the first time, I was amazed at the lyrics. “There was another in the fire”, “There is another in the fire” & “There’ll be another in the fire”, this is the truth, though we forsake God, he was, is and will always be there for us and just as Hebrews 13:8 says, he is the same God yesterday, today and forever who is faithfully guiding us amidst the fires of life. This song came to me as a reassurance that God is with me, come what may.
There’s a grace when the heart is under fire
Another way when the walls are closing in
And when I look at the space between
Where I used to be and this reckoning
I know I will never be alone
God is always there, whether everything is going well for us or our hearts be in fire. There is never a time that we’re stuck in all directions. When we let God control, ‘The Way’ opens up a way for us. When Peter was imprisoned and almost at the verge of death, God prepared a way for him to be free (Acts 12:1-11). Similarly, when we feel there is no hope left and we’re all lonely, God is next to us, preparing a way and all we need to remember is that we’re not alone.
There was another in the fire
Standing next to me
There was another in the waters
Holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding
Of how I’ve been set free
There is a cross that bears the burden
Where another died for me There is another in the fire
God is always faithful to his word (2 Thessalonians 3:3), standing next to us. When Daniel’s friends denied to worship the image that the king had made, the king threw them in the fiery furnace and ordered it to be heated seven times more.

What happened next was bewildering, four people walked out the furnace, the king’s advisers told him that the fourth looked like a son of God (Daniel 3:25). In another incident, when the Israelites were being chased by pharaoh and his army, God paved a way through the red sea (Exodus 14:21).
Similarly, at some point in our lives even we would have felt God making a way for us when we wouldn’t have had the slightest hope of moving forward. This song is a reminder for us to recall how God saved us from the miry clay where we were stuck. He saved us and showed the path to eternal life in him. He sent his only Son to die on the cross and raised him on the third day, proclaiming victory over sin and crushing the devil on that cross, and all this was done for sinners like us.
All my debt left for dead beneath the waters
I’m no longer a slave to my sin anymore
And should I fall in the space between
What remains of me and this reckoning
Either way I won’t bow
To the things of this world
And I know I will never be alone
When God forgives, he forgets too (Isaiah 43:25) unlike us humans who say we’ve forgiven others but continue to keep at least some grudge against them. When God saves us, we are no longer slaves to sin and it is through his grace that we are saved (Romans 6:14). There is nothing we can do in return for the priceless gift given by God, what we can do would be to give him our hearts completely.
Daniel’s friends were determined not to bow down before any other gods or images and trusted that God would deliver them but even if he didn’t, they wanted Nebuchadnezzar to know that they wouldn’t bow down (Daniel 3:17-18).
Do we try to understand God in such a manner that even if God doesn’t do what we want in our lives, we will still keep our hearts on him? We might have different gods like money, ego, pride etc., are we keeping God above everything or succumb to the gods of this world? Let us just examine ourselves and see how our relationship with God looks like. Do we trust God enough with the decisions and paths he has set for us or just want it to be our way.
There is another in the fire
Standing next to me
There is another in the waters
Holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding
What power set me free
There is a grave that holds no body
And now that power lives in me
Even today when we feel we’re in a fire, God is with us, taking us out safely. We need to patiently wait on him to understand how he is guiding us out and if we need any reminders when in doubt, we just need to recall how he saved us by giving his life and victoriously leaving that grave empty.
Once we realise this truth, understanding his love, we know that God resides in us and we needn’t look for him in any place or with anyone. We have a direct connection with him. Once we are able to establish that direct connection through his grace, we will look to him for light and not the mundane things of this world.
And I can see the light in the darkness
As the darkness bows to Him
I can hear the roar in the heavens
As the space between wears thin
I can feel the ground shake beneath us
As the prison walls cave in
Nothing stands between us
Nothing stands between us
Jesus said, I am the light of the world (John 8:12). He came down to shine his light on us, to save us from the darkness so that we can share this light with the others who are still in darkness. While Paul and Silas were sharing the light, they were put in prison and God rescued them miraculously (Acts 16:16-40). When we are ready to share the light to the people in darkness, we don’t have to worry, God will take care of everything and nothing can come in the way of the expansion of the kingdom of God.
There is no other name
But the Name that is Jesus
He who was and still is
And will be through it all
So come what may in the space between
All the things unseen and this reckoning
I know I will never be alone
When we come to light, we know that there is only one name, the name of Jesus that is enough for us. Whatever be the situation that we are in, whether we feel or not, the name of Jesus is enough and we know that he is with us and we are not alone.
There’ll be another in the fire
Standing next to me
There’ll be another in the waters
Holding back the seas
And should I ever need reminding
How good You’ve been to me
I’ll count the joy come every battle
‘Cause I know that’s where You’ll be
Just like yesterday and today, God will be with us tomorrow also. All the triumphs and trials will just take us closer to God. Like gold of greater worth is refined by fire (1 Peter 1:7), in the same manner, every battle we face just refines our trust more and more in God (James 1:2).
Like Daniel and his friends, let’s put our trust completely in God and be faithful to him and fulfill the purpose for which we are placed on this earth. God did not leave us alone in this world but walks beside us at all times.
What a beautiful song! Thank you for posting 🙂
