Desire to Sin
While we are trying to establish close relationship with God sometimes we fail to accomplish it and we blame others as if they are preventing our relationship with God. Parents and elders keep us under surveillance to deter us from committing sin, yet we falter. Our efforts to build up relationship with God is easily deterred. Our inner desires persuades us towards sin and separates us from God. Paul explains in his letter to the Romans that how a person is getting into sin. Human mind is always attracted towards sin. Because from birth itself sin rules over him.
“For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.” Romans 7:11
Commandment and Sin
The commandments are given to mankind for identifying evil. These gives him knowledge about sin in order to guard himself. As man is still in sin and taking every effort to come out of it, the commandments plunge him deeper into sin. Sin is like quicksand, the more we try to come out, the more we go deeper and deeper into it. As long as man is in sin, he fears the commandment and not God. Why does a man fear the commandments and not God? He looks at God as a stringent high school principal with rules stating do and dont’s and fails to understand God’s love. He can only comprehend the nature of God as that of a principal. Though the principal’s interest is on the intellectual growth of his student, however if the student is unable to reach the level of his expectation the Principal starts worrying about the image of his school rather than the state of his student. But God sent His Son while we were sinners and did not bother about His son’s image. His aim is to save us from sin. Not the Commandments but Jesus Christ can only save us as He is the one who is sinless. He is not stuck in the quicksand like us. He is standing out of it and stretching His hands to save us from sinking into sin.
“Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;” Isaiah 59:1
Hiding our Inequities
If we call upon His name He always answers us. But we call on him not to save us from sin but to save our image among our social circles. Honestly speaking, we do not want to come out of sin. God is merciful and has covered the shame of Adam and Eve with coats of skin. But their punishments were severe. We still like to cover the consequences of sins and are ready to go through the punishments.
Not Understanding the Will of God
A close walk with anyone helps us to understand them thoroughly. Even without saying much one could express their interest when they come closer. When we don’t walk with God, understanding His thoughts is very difficult. When we do not understand the will of God it is quite difficult for us to distinguish between God’s will and man’s will. We want to achieve what we desire and convince ourselves that they are in line with God’s will. This takes place during the major decisions taken in our lives regarding marriage, business ventures or career path. When God is willing to give us the best but we opt according to our will, then the wrath of God will definitely come upon us. The people of Israel did the same thing when they asked for meat rather than the heavenly manna. The craving for meat made them forget about the miraculous deeds of God. They also forgot the suffering they went through in Egypt. The only thing they could remember was the luscious food they had there and this kindled God’s wrath.
“While the meat was yet between their teeth, before it was consumed, the anger of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord struck down the people with a very great plague.” Numbers 11:33
God’s wrath and punishment
We too sometime suffer because of our wish to fulfil our own desires without understanding the will of God. God always directs us through His word. We can receive His directions only through faith, faith in Him and in His word. If our minds are tuned to receive His words, we will fear God. But usually our minds and hearts are tuned to this world’s message. In a multilingual manuscript one tends to read the language which is familiar to him. To receive His word we must be familiar with it. When the fear of God is in us then we will not conceal our sins. We will confess our sin without hesitation.
“The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.” Proverbs 8:13
Sinful Old habits / symptoms of Diseases
Even after God cleansed us from our sins, healed us from our sickness and delivered us from the clutches of Satan, we may sometimes feel the same craving for pain and oppression. A person who left idol worship instinctively bows his head when he sees one. Or a person who was healed is having the symptoms of his old disease. Take heart as these all the deceptive signs of Satan. If we take the name of Jesus and remember the blood He shed for us, nothing will harm us. When we move into a new house, we instinctively tend to take the road to the old house forgetting that we don’t live there anymore. With this revelation let us continually fear God and hate sin.
