When the Psalmist was overwhelmed after witnessing a king’s epic victory, it inspired him to write this song of Praise. Now, there could be a bunch of theories about who this king was, but one thing is for sure – this Psalm is all about the ultimate ruler, the King of kings. It kicks off with an intro that screams “This King is the ruler of the entire planet!” This Psalm is not an ordinary one as it is a total package of truth about the Lord of Lords.
King Over All The Earth
Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. For the LORD Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth.
Psalms 47:1-2 (NIV)
The scripture tells us that God deposes Kings and raises up others (Daniel 2:21). God grants kings the authority to govern specific territories, but no king has received authority to rule over the entire world. In another scriptural passage, the Psalmist affirms that God has established His king on Zion, the holy mountain (Psalms 2:6). Our God is a sovereign God, exercising complete control over all things, as everything ultimately belongs to Him. Regrettably, many individuals unknowingly attribute various phenomena to the devil or other elements, inadvertently rejecting the omnipotence of God.
Our Inheritance
He subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet. He chose our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.
Psalm 47:3-4 (NIV)
In the initial stages, God created all things and brought them under the dominion of humanity. However, when humanity lost its rightful authority, the devil seized control and tempted individuals to worship him in exchange for worldly blessings. It is undeniable that human beings yearn for prosperity; unfortunately, this desire has led them astray from God’s path and into the devil’s clutches.
The term ‘The pride of Jacob’ alludes to the territory bestowed upon the Israelites by God, an inheritance that was once possessed by other nations. The Psalmist contemplates this land as a manifestation of God’s love for His people, bestowing upon them a rightful inheritance. In the present context, what can be considered the inheritance of God’s children? Are we referring to the material blessings of this temporal world or the salvation that God has graciously provided through His Son, which we receive by faith?
Once our lives are transformed, Jesus says, ‘In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am (John 14:2-3).‘ Ultimately, the most crucial aspect is inheriting Eternal life. Attaining salvation is not equivalent to attaining eternity itself. Salvation serves as the gateway to eternity, inviting us to walk in the paths of righteousness to secure our salvation and receive the gift of Eternal life.
Ascension Of Our Lord
God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
Psalm 47:5-7 (NIV)
the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets.
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth;
sing to him a psalm of praise.
The Psalmist, while bestowing honour and reverence upon the King of kings, depicted a peculiar occurrence regarding the ascension of our Lord. In the times of the Old Testament, the concept of God descending upon the earth seemed unthinkable. However, by the grace of God, the Psalmist, long before the birth of Jesus, derived prophetic insight into the Son of God descending upon humanity and ascending to the heavens amidst resounding shouts of jubilation. Jesus was lifted up before the very eyes of the onlookers, vanishing from their sight as a cloud enveloped Him (Acts 1:9).
The People Of The God Of Abraham
God reigns over the nations;
Psalm 47:8-9 (NIV)
God is seated on his holy throne.
The nobles of the nations assemble
as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings of the earth belong to God;
he is greatly exalted.
In this world, individuals often extol the power and authority of earthly kings. However, the Psalmist, in contrast, exalts the sovereignty of God, proclaiming that He reigns over all nations. At times, we may overlook this simple truth and instead succumb to the adversary’s schemes, erroneously designating certain places as strongholds for the forces of evil.
The author of the Psalms demonstrated a deep understanding and unwavering belief in the covenant God established with Abraham, an essential aspect of the Abrahamic faith. He regarded those who faithfully followed God’s teachings as beneficiaries of this covenant, perceiving it as a testament to the faithfulness and greatness of the Almighty. In doing so, the psalmist celebrated and elevated the magnificence of God, acknowledging His steadfastness in fulfilling the promises made to their ancestor, Abraham.
Dear Lord, we humbly beseech you, for it is you who unfailingly brings to pass your promises. May our hearts be fortified with unwavering faith in your promises, and may our minds discern the unequivocal realization thereof. Shield us from erroneously ascribing your boundless love and mercy to any other source. Amen.
