Jesus asked the woman standing alone, “Has no one condemned you?” Earlier, a mob had gathered against her to condemn her to death according to the law of Moses. Fortunately, they tried to implement the law through Jesus to make Him guilty of not following the law of Moses thinking that He would defame the law of Moses. Jesus did not come to eradicate the laws but to enact them with His love. The incident narrated by John in chapter eight of his Gospel is the best example of what Jesus did to the law and its punishment.
According to the law, the wages of sin is death, and to enact the law, God blended His agape love with the terminal law and fulfilled it by keeping the sins of all people on His Son, thereby allowing Him to taste the bitterness of death. Jesus, with His absolute obedience to His Father, conquered death and opened the gates of heaven for us to have eternity. The helpless state of this woman drew the mercy of Jesus to receive pardon for her sin.
Fulfillment of the law
Despite our unworthiness, God saved us by giving His Son as a ransom to redeem us from the clutches of sin. The Bible says God redeemed us by paying the death penalty with the blood of His Son. The ransom is paid to whom? God did not pay the devil the precious blood of His Son. Many mistook that God paid the life of His Son to redeem us from satan. Of course, the devil lured humans to disobey God and hold them in his jurisdiction by leading them to eternal death. Often, the devil reminded God about the legal indebtedness of people. God fulfilled His law by tallying His account statement by paying the ransom on behalf of the debtors. God made the book adjustment lawfully and did not manipulate it. He redeemed us from eternal death, the outcome of our sin. The devil is not the originator of the decree, so he is not the one condemning us to death, but God sentenced us to death according to His law. God fulfilled His law by substituting Jesus in our place and saved us from eternal death.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Matthew 5:17 (NIV)
The Reconciliation
Leaving the glory of Heaven, Jesus chose to live with His brothers and sisters on this Earth. Unfortunately, the sins of His brothers and sisters compelled Him to forgo His relationship with His Father. Despite losing His Sonship, Jesus lived among us sinners, and even died with the thieves, just to reconcile us with His Father.
For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Romans 5:10-11 (NIV)
At one stage, Jesus sacrificed His sonship and gave it to all of us to enable us to call His Father our Father. The sins of this world denied His Sonship, and He addressed His Father as God in the manner we called Him before our salvation. He was numbered as a sinner and called God for His rescue, and when rescued, God gave the sonship to us along with Jesus.
During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.
Hebrews 5:7-9 (NIV)
After conquering death, Jesus rose to life and reconciled us with His Father. The following words of resurrected Jesus show how He added us to His family. While teaching His disciples to pray, Jesus asked them to address God as their Father. Later God gave this Sonship to all who believe in His Son (John 1:12).
Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
John 20:17 (NIV)
Our Sins Are Thrown Into The Depths Of The Sea
No one is righteous but all are made righteous because of the righteousness of Jesus. God forgave us two thousand years ago when His Son died on the cross. He forgave not only the sins of the believers but the sins of all people yet to believe. Many are ignorant of this truth and ask God to forgive their sins even today. When people repent, God will help them realize that He forgave their sins two thousand years ago, and this realization frees people from the hold of sin.
But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.
Hebrews 2:9-10 (NIV)
While God forgave us a long time ago, the people affected by our sinful acts might not forgive us. People ignore our mistakes when we live with the devil. Once we begin our new life, leaving all our sins, the devil diverts the anger of the people affected by our sins to torment our consciousness. Sometimes people even fabricate false stories to captivate us. But God is always kind enough to catch them on their plot. Knowing the kindness of God once, David prayed like this.
Since they hid their net for me without causeand without cause dug a pit for me, may ruin overtake them by surprise—may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
Psalms 35:7-8 (NIV)
Only when we are confident that God forgave our sins will we be able to overcome this kind of a situation. The past sin and its repercussion on us, has nothing to do with our new life, but it is not the same with the people affected by their fabricated stories or our past mistakes, and they continue to stay in their sins. They are keeping their hurt fresh and keep tormenting themselves and subsequently will try to destroy our salvation. It is meaningless to expect a pardon from their end because they are hurt and frustrated. They are angry at us and will remind us of our past and also tell people of our past mistakes. When our past mistakes become alive in the air, the assurance of God’s forgiveness will help us not to become guilty as we are the forgiven children of God.
Without being affected by their allegations, when we pray for their salvation, it pleases God. Job prayed for his four friends, who reminded him of all his weaknesses during his helpless situation and found favor in the eyes of God. The allegations did not affect Job because He was seeing the Redeemer alive, the one who redeemed him from the sinful life. As God bought us by the blood of Jesus, no matter how grave our past sins may be, they can not affect us anymore. They are gone under the depths ocean forever. This metaphor encourages believers to appreciate the sea for its forgetfulness. Concerning God, He does not forget but reminds us occasionally to awaken our consciousness and lead us to salvation. When already saved, He reminds our past sins to make out the difference between the unsaved and saved life to appreciate His salvation. Hence, God does not forget but does not hold any of our mistakes to condemn us but to save us from perishing (2 Corinthians 7:10). Moreover, our Redeemer lives to defend us, knowing our sins, from the allegation raised by the devil to our Father.
Who is a God like you,
Micah 7:18-19 (NIV)
who pardons sin and forgives the transgression
of the remnant of his inheritance?
You do not stay angry forever
but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us;
you will tread our sins underfoot
and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.
Our Legal Indebtedness Is Nailed To The Cross
While Jesus asked the woman caught in adultery, has no one condemned you, she said no one. As she stood beside her Redeemer, the accusers left her alone. When the Spirit of God resides in our hearts, our past sins cannot harm us. The Holy Spirit seals us with the truth that we are the forgiven children of God.
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 1:13-14 (NIV)
Let us be cautious as not to provide a foothold for the devil when he attempts to condemn us for our past transgressions. After participating in the transformative act of repentance, if we do not further cultivate our relationship with our Heavenly Father, the devil may have the opportunity to drag us back into our former state through anger and retaliation. However, if we have truly embraced the baptism of Jesus, signifying our death to sin and resurrection with the Lord, our sins are forgiven, and we become new beings. In the presence of those who accuse us, we will remain calm, secure in the knowledge that Jesus has nullified such accusations through His sacrifice on the cross.
having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
Colossians 2:12-14 (NIV)
When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.
Our Redeemer died for our sins and rose to life to dwell in our hearts. As our Redeemer lives in our hearts, no arrow of the accuser can plunge our souls. Furthermore, the precious blood of Jesus Christ covers us from all possible attacks of the devil. Let us thank our Redeemer for shedding His precious blood for us. As long as our Redeemer lives, God throws away our sins into the depths of the sea. God sent His Son in His very image to erase the imprints of sin in our lives. The bruised flesh (word) of Jesus fills even the engraved molds left by our past sins. He renews our salvation every day and makes us whole. Praise God!
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:1-2 (NIV)
